Artist Bio:
Build your Salsa music collection with this collection of Afro-Cuban music from around the globe. From Japan to Jerusalem, Stockholm to Southern France, salsa bands are springing up around the world. Senegal's Africando and France's Fatal Mambo have recently brought attention to non-Latino bands that are performing music styles rooted in the rhythm and melodies of Cuba and Puerto Rico.
The artists in this collection represent just the tip of the iceberg. The Netherlands' Nueava Manteca is widely acknowledged as on of the innovative and creative Latin Jazz ensembles in any country. Fatal Mambo brought Gallic groove to the dance floors of Latin dance clubs and added elements of North African and Spanish influences that most Cuban or Puerto Rican artists wouldn't even consider attempting. Haiti's Mario Canonge could not only hold its own against salsa's best pianists, he could probably teach tham a thing or two. For purists, the word "salsa" is an overly-generic word that was manufactured by the record industry in order to establish an easily definable genre for marketing purposes. Unfortunately, there is no other word that covers all of the styles and origins of what is also referred to as Latin or Tropical music. In general, we use "salsa" to refer to the range of Cuban and Puerto Rican popular music forms such as son, cha cha cha, plena, songo, mambo, bomba. guaguanco, guajira, etc.
