Album Reviews

Review:

Gétatchèw Mèkurya is probably the most revered veteran of Ethiopian Saxophone. A real giant, both physically and musically. Not only is he at the very top level of Ethiopian Saxophonists, but he is the inventor of an extremely distinctive musical style: he plays some "Shellèla" starting from which is a form of singing that is purely warlike. The improvisation he made in that style could ring a bell to free jazz lovers but the " Negus of Ethiopian sax " began to play this music in the beguining 50's. This volume of the Ethiopiques series is all dedicated to this unique artist. Released in 2003.
