A former bass player for Hole and Smashing Pumpkins, Melissa Auf der Maur will be appearing as part of our "Music On Photography" series at National Geographic's headquarters in Washington D.C. on April 8th, 2011. Auf der Maur's artistic journey has taken her from rock music to photography, and her images have been published in major magazines and exhibited internationally. In an evening filled with startling imagery, Auf der Maur will discuss this work and her multimedia concept project, "Out of Our Minds," in conversation with Robert Michael Murray, National Geographic's vice president for social media.
"CLove in Crowd on Stage"
Courtney Love and fans on stage, USA 1999.
"Towards the end of most shows Hole [that] would play, Courtney would invite fans to join us on stage for the last song. This was a daily event on our Celebrity Skin summer tour, which, in my opinion, was the best we ever were as a live band. There were three albums of songs to choose from, we were all getting along, and the shows were great. I loved seeing how many young women had the balls to hop up on stage and scream at the top of their lungs with Courtney. I have run into some of those women in the last ten years and it seems those onstage experiences left a lasting impression on those people. I am glad to have documented most of these shows." - Melissa Auf der Maur
