The Mapuche indians, ancestral inhabitants of south central region of Chile, make up an ethnic group with a language, religious beliefs, a set of values, customs, and physiological characteriscs that distinguish them as a specific cultural entity. They are perfectly distinct from any other native American ethnic group, and above all, are radically different from the cross Chilean society (5% of the population).
