In the late 1970s, groups like the Star Band of Dakar synthesized traditional music and instruments with Cuban sounds, paving the way for the modern Senegalese pop style called mbalax. Following in their dance steps, Toure - Toure, formed by guitarists Daby and Omar Toure, represents the next level. Their music builds on mbalax, with strong, lyrical vocals and choruses, hypnotic balafon and Cuban tumbao percussion. Their music shows how far you can go and still remain rooted in African tradition. Courtesy Calabash Music
