It's safe to say music like this would never have made it in a Taliban-controlled Afghanistan. On their debut release, Kabul Workshop blend traditional Afghani elements with electric sounds from the West.

Kabul Workshop

Heavily influenced by Afghan and Indian music, the electro-world of Kabul Workshop differentiates itself from the Electro-Asian scene by its originality and the quality of its compositions. Kabul Workshop is a workshop of musical research where the resulting melodies are a direct expression of the state of mind of their creators and a bridge between their different cultures.

Both coming from classical backgrounds, Khaled Arman and Francesco Russo (of Afghan and Italian origins respectively) have found that their artistic journey, and their curiosity nourish their Kabul Workshop compositions. Far from being the fruit of an odd fusion, the tracks created by this sound research workshop put technology at the service of melody. Throughout the pair extends their field of expression in an artistic language thousands of years old. (Michel Masserey, journalist, Le Temps, Geneva) —Courtesy Calabash Music
