This music is driven by rich rhythmic textures, weaving polyrhythmic grooves, deep percussive flavors, while tapping into a jazzy ethnic sound. Colorful melodies and grooves are drawn from folkloric and contemporary Afro-Cuban, African, Brazilian rhythms.

Ido Ziv

Originally from Israel, Ido Ziv was inspired by the drum and rhythm at the age of nine, studying drums and playing in the school orchestra. As time went on, he became engaged in traditional and folkloric styles. His journey has taken him to various parts of the world to play and study with master musicians from Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Cuba, Brazil and Trinidad. His style and musical voice draws from these traditions and can be heard within jazz, funk, rock and Latin styles.

He has performed with and accompanied dance with members and former members of Les Ballet du Senegal, Los Monuquios de Mantanzas/Grupo Afro-Cuba, Mali troupes including Troupe Sewa and Eskesta Dance Company from Ethiopia and Israel.

Currently, his interests lie not only within the music, but also in the understanding of the context in which the music manifests itself; how it can transform, describe, record, and change culture. This global sound not only brings artists, musicians and listeners together from all corners of the world, but also brings our global awareness closer together. Ido's music taps into the power of music to create change, promote tolerance and nourish an understanding of our humanity through performance. —Courtesy Calabash Music
