Amayenge was first born as New Crossbones, led by the late Kris Chali, in the town of Choma in Zambia's Southern Province in 1978. From such humble beginnings, the band has gone on to become one of the most successful groups in the history of Zambian music. Amayenge's music is kalindula, a musical style that originated among the Bemba people of Zambia's Luapula province.
Chali died in May 2003 and everyone thought that was the end of the band. But the band soldiers on under the leadership of Fraser Chilembo. Courtesy Calabash Music
