New York To Host Multicultural Celebration of Women's Achievement
Singers Marta Gomez and Luca Mundaca recently announced a special performance in New York to celebrate International Women's Day, Thursday, March 8, 2007. The concert will be held at New York venue Joe's Pub, in conjunction with Putumayo records, celebrating the release of the recent compilation Women of the World. According to the label's press release, the concert will "celebrate extraordinary women and will reflect upon their struggle for equality, justice, peace and development in recognition of International Women's Day."
Originally from Colombia, Marta Gomez (pictured) is one of the most riveting singer-songwriters in world music today and was nominated for a Latin Billboard Music Award in 2005, Singer-songwriter Luca Mundaca was relatively unknown before being discovered by Putumayo for their previous release Brazilian Lounge. She combines bossa nova melodies with urban folk sensibility.
Both artists are featured on Putumayo World Music's February 27th release, Women of the World: Acoustic, a celebration of acoustic music by some of the world's leading female artists in honor of International Women's Day. A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this album will be donated to the Global Fund for Women in support of their efforts to promote and defend the human rights of women and girls around the world.
