California's Los Cenzontles Debut New Les Blank-Directed Video For "Soy Mexicano Americano" At Nat Geo Music
by Tom PryorEach week Nat Geo Music scours the far reaches of the interwebs to bring you the coolest new music videos from around the globe, and this week we're proud to host the debut of "Soy Mexicano Americano" - a brand new video from San Pablo, California-based Mexican folk ensemble Los Cenzontles (pronounced Los Senn-sont-less) .
Taken from the Bay Area group's upcoming album, Raza de Oro (due out in October), which features collaborations with Ry Cooder, David Hidalgo and Pete Sears, "Soy Mexicano Americano" is a rousing call for bi-cultural pride in the face of ignorance and intolerance, in keeping with the group's origins and mission.
Los Cenzontles originated at the cultural center of the same name in San Pablo, California, a heavily immigrant and Hispanic neighborhood north of Oakland. Founded by director Eugene Rodrigez in 1994, Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center is an artist-driven, non-profit organization where Latino youths learn Mexican folk dance, music and arts through a multi-level mentorship program. It promotes Mexican-American culture through an after school academy, performing touring group and media production group.
What's more, the video was directed by none other than legendary documentary filmmaker Les Blank best known for his portraits of American traditional musicians, including 1976's Chulas Fronteras, the story of the norteño music played on both sides of the Mexico-Texas border.
And for those of you keeping score, this is Blank's second video ever - the first one he directed was an unreleased short for Aretha Franklin he shot back in the '60s!
Enjoy!
