Video Selecter: Tabu Ley Rochereau

Watch this funky '70s Afropop gem, shot by legendary filmaker Albert Maysels!

Each week Nat Geo Music scours the far corners of the internet to bring you the coolest videos from around the globe; and this week we didn't have to go farther than Facebook, where our friends at the wonderful Stern's Music record label posted this Afropop gem from the 1970s (and kindly gave us permission to use it, as well).

Shot in Kinshasha, Zaire in 1974, by the legendary documentarian Albert Maysles, this rare footage catches Tabu Ley Rochereau, one of the true giants of Congolese soukous, at the top of his game.

Here's what Stern's had to say about the footage: "Outstanding footage of Tabu Ley and his tres risque 'Leyettes' filmed in Kinshasa by Albert Maysles, director of the Rolling Stones documentary "Gimme Shelter", Immediately after this concert the two dancing "Leyettes" were arrested for indecent exposure and public lewdness causing Tabu Ley to pay a hefty fine for their release."

Awesome.
