Planet Arlington Festival Announces Lineup
Free World Music Festival Celebrates Diversity in Northern Virginia
by Tom PryorArlington, VA will play host to the first annual Planet Arlington Festival this September. The free festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 2nd at the Netherlands Carillon, and will feature a diverse array of performers from around the world.
Artists scheduled to appear at the festival include Zimbabwean singer Oliver Mtukudzi (pictured) and his band Black Spirits, Irish-American fiddler Eileen Ivers and her band Immigrant Soul, Bay Area Latin rockers Los Mocosos, Persian-American chanteuse Niyaz and a Brazilian-klezmer mashup featuring Frank London's Klezmer Brass AllStars with special guest Maracatu NY. The event will be hosted by local radio personality Kojo Nnamdi, host of The Kojo Nnamdi Show on WAMU FM.
According to festival organizers, the festival "kicks off a season of comprehensive Planet Arlington activities exploring issues of globalization, immigration and the environment, through the lens of the arts and humanities." For more information, consult the Planet Arlington website.
