Martirio To Make New York Debut

Spanish Cult Favorite To Perform Primavera En New York at Joe's Pub

Spanish singer Martirio will make her New York debut on May 8th & 9th with two nights of music at Joe's Pub in celebration of the release of her latest album, Primavera En Nueva York (released April 17th on Sony/BMG).

A cult figure in her native Spain, Martirio first made her name in the '80s, during the intensely creative art and musical movement known as La Movida. Her theatrical, often campy blend of traditional flamenco with rock and new wave made her a favorite of contemporaries like filmaker Pedro Almodovar (who cast her in a cameo in his film Talk To Her.

Recorded in New York City in May, 2006, Primavera En Nueva York unleashes Martirio on a handful of classic Latin American boleros. Backed by an international trio of jazz heavyweights—pianist Kenny Drew, Jr, bassist George Mraz and Cuban drummer Dafnis Prieto—Martirio put aside her usual flamenco stylings for a set of jazzy Latin ballads.

The album was produced by Nat Chediak and Spanish filmaker Fernando Trueba—the duo behind a number of flamenco jazz and crossover explorations (including Bebo Valdes and Diego El Cigala's Grammy-winning 2004 release Lagrimas Negras).

Martirio and her band will be performing this new material first in Miami, at the Miami Artime Theater (May 3rd and 4th), and then bringing home to New York with two performances at Joe's Pub on May 8th and two more the night of May 9th.
