Portuguese fado singer Mariza recently announced plans for an upcoming North American tour in support of her new album, Terra, scheduled for Stateside release on January 27, 2009. The three-month, 47 city tour kicks off in Toronto's Masey Hall on February 13th, and is Mariza's most ambitious North American adventure yet — introducing the young fadista to whole new cities and audiences along the way.

For the uninitiated, fado is Portugal's homegrown sound, extravagantly sad and joyous at the same time, and rooted in Lisbon's seafaring community, where anxious wives once waited for husbands to return from sea—and mourned those who did not. Mariza, whose parents ran a fado house in Lisbon's famed Alfama neighborhood, grew up steeped in the music and began singing at an early age.

Mariza made her international recording debut in 2001 with Fado em Mim, and has emerged as the reigning queen of Portugal's recent fado revival, releasing several albums and taking the music international—selling out stages from Carnegie Hall and Disney Concert Hall to London's Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House, and winning awards, including a BBC World Music Award and 2008 Latin Grammy nomination.

Produced by powerhouse Spanish producer Javier Limón, Terra promises to be Mariza's most adventurous album yet, with guest appearances from Brazilian pianist Ivan Lins, Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes, Cape Verdean singer Tito Paris and rising Spanish flamenco star Concha Buika.
