Shakira Sweeps Latin Grammys

Colombian Pop Princess Takes Home Four Awards

Shakira was the big winner at last night's Latin Grammy Awards, receiving four awards for her Fijacion Oral Vol 1 album.

The Colombian singer took home statues for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year for her collaboration with Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz on "La Tortura," and Album Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Album for Fijacion Oral Vol 1, in a ceremony held in New York's Madison Square Garden. These successes follow up her Grammy win last year in the Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album category for her English-language album Oral Fixation Vol. 2.

Sharkira used her acceptance speeches to plead for greater acceptance of undocumented immigrants. "I hope soon they will receive they recognition they deserve from the government," the 29-year-old singer said.

The night's other big winners included Puerto Rican reggaeton group Calle 13, who took home three awards (Best New Artist, Best Urban Music Album and Best Short Music Video) and Argentine rocker Gustavo Cerati who won Best Rock Song and Best Rock Vocal Album. Meanwhile, Brazilian legend Sergio Mendes was named Best Brazilian Contemporary Pop Album for his Timeless collaboration with Black Eyed Peas' Will.i.am, and Ricky Martin was honored as Latin Grammys' Man of the Year for his campaign against child sex trafficking.

The Latin Grammy Awards, now in its six year, celebrates Latin music from across the Americas and Spain, and gave out forty-seven creative and technical awards honoring genres ranging from traditional salsa, merengue and Mexican regional music to pop, rock and even Christian rock. Last night's event, broadcast live on Univision, marked the first time the Latin Grammy Awards were held in New York City.
