Grupo Fantasma Win GRAMMY
First GRAMMY Award For Grupo Fantasma and Nat Geo Music
da Tom PryorNat Geo Music congratulates Grupo Fantasma for winning their first GRAMMY award at the 53rd annual GRAMMY Awards Ceremony, held last night in Los Angeles.
The award was presented for their album El Existential - on the Nat Geo Music label - in the "Best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album" category. It was Grupo's second GRAMMY nomination and first win, and the first nomination and win for the Nat Geo Music label.
It was a tough category, this year, too. Grupo beat out Latin GRAMMY Award-winning Colombian rappers ChocQuibtown, former Menudo member and Latin-GRAMMY Award-winner Robi "Draco" Rosa, critically-acclaimed Chilean electro-rapper Ana Tijoux, and Mexican dj duo Bostich+Fussible, of the GRAMMY-nominated Nortec Collective, to take home their statue.
Grupo Fantasma commented on their win earlier today in an official statement on their website, saying: "Thank you for all the support - we can not express the gratitude we have for our families, friends, fans, label, publicists, publishing company, radio promoters and everyone else who has believed in us for the last decade. It's been a wild ride..."
Though the whole band couldn't attend the ceremony, percussionist Jose Galeano, trumpeter Gilbert Elorreaga and trombonist Mark "Speedy" Gonzales were on hand to accept the award on behalf of the group.
