Danish Musicial Ambassadors To Perform In New York
Global Village Denmark-NY Will Showcase Danish World Music
by Global Rhythm Magazine NewsOn Saturday, January 20th, four world music ambassadors from Denmark's lively local scene will appear in concert with several esteemed New York players at Makor Cultural Center. The Global Village Denmark-NY event was conceived to allow visiting artists to collaborate with the cream of NY based instrumentalists and music professionals, constructing an enduring artistic bridge between the two communities.
The participants will create five cross-cultural matchups. Afenginn (pictured), a Balkan-Scandinavian quintet, will be collaborating with trumpeter, bandleader, composer and producer Frank London.
Balkan gypsy accordionist Lelo Nika, will create the ultimate Balkan-Fusion band while in NYC with master tambal (cimbalom) player George Mihalache, Greek bass player Andreou Panagiotis, Brazilian-born pianist and keyboardist Helio Alves, and Cuban drummer Ernesto Simpson.
Isreali-born singer Dalia Faitelson will showcase her latest, Middle Eastern-tinged release, Pilpel, with backing from long-time collaborator Lelo Nika, Andreou Panagiotis on bass, Moroccan percussionist and oud player Brahim Fribgane, and violinist and oud master Rachid Halihal.
Singer Laila Skovmand of the Danish pop band Symfobia will be creating (with the help of two or her bandmates) new, original material from an especially challenging palette. She will be working with Chinese pipa player and singer Min Xiao-Fen, and Argentinean bandoneón player Hector Del Curto.
