FELA! Returns To D.C.
Broadway's Afrobeat Smash Hits The District
The Tony-winning Broadway musical FELA! - which explores the life and work of Nigerian musical pioneer Fela Kuti - returns to Washington, D.C. next week for a run at The Warner Theater.
FELA! is the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afrobeat rhythms ignited a generation. Inspired by his mother, a civil rights champion, he defied a corrupt and oppressive military government and devoted his life and music to the struggle for freedom and human dignity.
FELA! is a triumphant tale of courage, passion and love, featuring Fela Kuti's captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Bill T. Jones. The original Broadway production won a Tony for Best Choreography in 2010.
The current, touring production of the musical features Sahr Ngaujah reprising the title role, and has been on the road and around the world with engagements in London, Lagos, Nigeria and more since the original version closed on Broadway last January.
