Estrella Morente To Make US Debut In February

Spanish Flamenco Diva To Perform At New York's Town Hall

The World Music Institute will kick off its annual New York Flamenco Festival with the U.S. debut of Spanish flamenco star Estrella Morente, at New York's Town Hall on February 3rd. Though Morente made her international recording debut in 2001, with the critically acclaimed My Songs And A Poem, the Town Hall concert will mark her first live performance in North America.

Morente is the daughter of flamenco legend Enrique Morente, who produced My Songs, as well as her most recent record, 2006's Mujeres—which features the title song of Pedro Almodovar's recent Academy and Golden Globe nominated film Volver. Morente's voice is dubbed over Penelope Cruz's in the film's only musical scene. Ms. Morente is also a recent Latin Grammy nominee.

The Flamenco Festival, now in it's seventh year, will continue throughout the month of February in multiple venues in New York, and will feature over 100 dancers, vocalists and guitarists from Spain. The music will range from flamenco puro to contemporary innovations, and will include perfromances from legendary guitarist Paco de Lucía, the dance companies of Rafaela Carrasco and Sara Baras, and musicians paired with guest dancers including El Pele with Edu Lozano and the Gerardo Núñez Quintet with Carmen Cortés.
