Droma Gypsy Festival Announces 2008 Lineup
New York's annual Gypsy Festival finds a new name and a permanent home.
by Tom PryorIn the past the annual NY Gypsy Festival has lived up to it's nomadic roots with shows scattered across various venues in the city. But this year's festival is establishing itself in more permanent digsthe new East Village live music venue Dromand rebranding itself as the Droma Gypsy Festival. Now in it's fourth year, the event runs from September 24th to October 3rd and will feature twenty Rom (Gypsy) and Rom-influenced artists and DJ from around the globe.
"This year we felt the music and the spirit would be better presented at one single venue," said festival co-producer Serdar Ilhan, in a press statement. "The festival will continue the tradition of presenting the amazing world of Gypsy music to New York audiences at Drom."
This year's acts will include Turkish band Baba Zula, French multi-kulti outfit Watcha Clan,
Berlin-based singer Dotschy Reinhardt, French fusion outfit Balval, Danish klezmorim Mames Babaganoush and Chicago ensemble Eastern Blok. Closer to home local favorites Zlatne Uste, the NY Gypsy All-Stars, Indian marching band Red Baraat Festival, trumpet legend Frank London and more will round out the live bill.
On the DJ side Austria's DJ Dunkelbunt and Belgian DJ duo Nohmada will be offering support to the live shows, as will New York City residents DJ Joro-Boro and GlobeSonic Sound System's DJ Derek Beres.
"There is more of a homogenous mix this year," says co-producer Mehmet Dede. "Sixteen bands, including seven international bands, will be playing alongside DJs over nine days. We have bands flying in from France, Turkey, Germany, and Denmark, as well as local artists with roots in Romania, India, Spain, Italy, Macedonia, and Serbia. We are covering the music of some of the key countries that Gypsies have settled in as they traveled from India to Spain. As a result, we hope that a broader and inquisitive audience will follow this year's festival."
