Damian Marley Wins Six International Reggae And World Music Awards

"Jr. Gong" Sweeps Ceremony

Damian "Junior Gong" Marley swept the The International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) on Saturday night with wins in all of the six categories he was nominated in. The ceremony, held on May 6th in New York City's historic Apollo Theater, was the 25th Annual installment of the influential reggae and Caribbean music event.

Nominated on the strength of his Grammy-winning 2005 release, Welcome to Jamrock, Marley walked away with awards for "Recording Artist of the Year," "Best Song," "Best Album", "Best Music Video," "Songwriter of the Year" (which he shared with his brother Stephen Marley), and—most poignantly—"Bob Marley Award For Entertainer of the Year."

The youngest son of reggae legend Bob Marley, Damian made history last year when Welcome to Jamrock entered the Billboard charts at #7 as the the highest debuting (and highest initial grossing) album in reggae history. Marley capitalized on that success at the 2006 Grammys, where he took home statues for "Best Reggae Album" and "Best Urban/Alternative Performance"—the first ever to go to a reggae artist in that category. Marley also won a Grammy in 2001 for his album Halfway Tree.

Other awards went to Beenie Man for "Best Male DJ/Rapper", Matisyahu for "Best New Entertainer," Jah Cure for "Best Male Vocalist," and Sean Paul for "Best Crossover Song." In addition, awards were handed out to Wyclef Jean ("Community Service Award"), Youssou N'Dour, ("Best African Entertainer"), and Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte who received the "Marcus Garvey Humanitarian Award."
