Review:
The first Wassoulou Sound compilation put Mali's Wassoulou region and its music firmly on the global map. Of the artists featured, Oumou Sangare and Sali Sidibe have gone on to establish themselves in their own right as artists of international stature. The earthy music which originated in traditional hunting dances, combines traditional instrument like the kamel-ngoni, one stringed fiddle, bolon, and djembe with electric guitars and keyboards. Marrying ancient and modern it has not only inspired arrangements by Salif Keita and Mory Kante but its directness, sturdy energy and powerful female voices have struck a chord with European and American audiences fed on a diet of blues and soul. Fresh and funky - the Wassoulou women are back! 01 Coumba Sidibe - Kani Kassi 02 Sali Sidibe - Gnouman Ke La 03 Djeneba Seck - Kankeletigui 04 Djeneba Diakite - Nale Nale 05 Les Soeurs Dibe - Ni La Kani 06 Coumba Sidibe - Mougakan 07 Saran & Tata - Ita Dia 08 Kagbe Sidibe - Simbo 09 Bintou Sidibe - Barika Bognala 10 Nahawa Doumbia - Djina Mousso — CalabashMusic.com |
