Known to the world as "The Mbira Queen of Zimbabwe" Stella Chiweshe is one of the first women to break into the male dominated tradition of mbira. Before the Zimbabwe revolution Stella was recognized as a ritual mbira player at secret bira ceremonies hidden from the government. Since the revolution she has traveled the world spreading the beautiful music and culture of the Shona people of Zimbabwe.  

Her latest double cd "Double Check" straddles these two worlds. The first program "trance hits" Stella music speaks to the old ways of mbira music focusing on spirits, dreams, and natural sounds. The second program "classic hits" brings her international sound to the fore with songs aimed at today's youth who she implores to take pride in the traditional culture of Zimbabwe.

This week we decided to put two songs up for free; one song from each program of the double album.  

With her feet in both worlds and a strong voice everywhere she walks, Stella Chiweshe exemplifies the spirit of Calabash Music.
