Review:
Safi , made betwen Paris, Essaouira, and Timbuktu with Tyour Gnaoua (a performance collective from southern Morroco) allowed Ray Lema to reunite his musical passions with Africa and adapt to his striking traditional style. The result is a shimmering work in which the Gnoua (or Gnawa) take front seat, around which Ray interweaves his own lines, at times in unison and at times contrapuntally, using the guitar, keyboards, vocals, the kora and percussion. Released in 2000. — CalabashMusic.com |
