It was well past midnight, but the narrow cobbled streets of the city's old Pelourinho section of Salvador da Bahia were still alive with music. In one small courtyard, people danced to a mixture of salsa, rumba and Latin rhythms combined with Arabic musical melodies sung by Lebanese singer Hanine y son Cubano. This was Bahia's Mercado Cultural, or Latin American Cultural Market, a six-day event that brings together performers, agents and producers of music, dance and theater. This was my first encounter with one of the most successful fusion acts we've ever encountered. I know that Arabic melodies combined with Cuban son sounds like a mind-bender, but check it out for yourself...
